About True Education Manhwa

Finally I've read the 125th episode of this manhwa so this is my opinion :

I'm interesting with some new characters. Gun Sera gives new perspective from student's view, the pacifist Daniel Hyun, and the lawyer guy, Lee Junbi.

Especially the lawyer guy Samuel Seo Lee Junbi. Seems like he's gonna be my fav character from this manhwa. He always assesses things from the perspective of legal science. I want him to be the anti-hero character in this manhwa. As manhwa action reader, tbh I'm tired with the overpowered character with strong muscles hit the wall until it breaks. I need more the overpowered brain based on real science.

And well finally, talking about the racist issue. I again disagree with Chae Yongtaek-nim. Like.. what does it mean? Makes a biracial Korean-Black student as the bully? The actual happen is Korean often being racist to darkest skin people especially from Southeast Asia or South Asia. Previously, about the episode that talked about the feminist extreme. I'm a little offended and I want to ask. Is it really like that in Korea? what I know is that the lives of Korean women are quite sad, the patriarchal movement is truly extreme and is fully supported by the government. If it really happened, what the author did was distorts the facts. He makes a far-right narrative that uses accusations by cherry picking. Only mentioning the issue of left extremist groups to call a whole group of leftists is the extremist with the aim of justifying the selfish actions of the far right wing.

Overall I really regret this manhwa. I really like the educational criticism issue in it. I heard that the manhwa was withdrawn and will be revised by the author. I hope the author learns from his mistakes.

📕My first comic i ever read

Title: Get schooled/True Education

Get Schooled is set in South Korea, and apparently juvenile delinquency has gotten so bad that the government passes a law that empowers government agents to visit problematic schools and literally beat up the students as their way of educating, and also empower teachers to be able to beat up students as well. Despite the law being controversial in-universe, its shown to be very effective, some delinquent students change their life because of TRPA (Teachers rights protection agency) not only TRPA change their life also save them from the people who ruined their life. Also this story is not only focus on those students bullies, it also focus on the way of the teacher teach and how they act towards their students.TRPA also punish teachers who have assault their students. the people who use TRPA are morally right while the people who were against TRPA are wrong. The message of the story is basically “To stop such hatred"

Critique de Get Schooled

En Corée du Sud, on a tendance à retrouver beaucoup d’aspects de cultures adjacentes en beaucoup plus exacerbé. Le capitalisme ? Impitoyable et broyant sans pitié les individus dans d’innombrables compagnies se ressemblant toutes et souvent à la durée très éphémère. Les idols ? L’industrie est tellement poussée que l’on retrouve beaucoup plus leurs musiques chez nous que les idols du Japon, et en plus, ça s’étend aux deux sexes. La violence scolaire poussant des tas de jeunes à se suicider au Japon ? Encore pire en Corée avec des chiffres de violences et de suicide beaucoup plus élevés. C’est là-dessus que se base Get Schooled, un webcomic écrit par Yongtaek Chae et dessiné par Garam Han.

Le Webcomic est un genre de bande dessiné qui prend beaucoup d’ampleur ces dernières années, au point où certaines de leurs œuvres sont édités et distribués dans nos librairies (Lore Olympus, Let’s Play ou The Gamer) et d’autres sont carrément adaptés en série sur Netflix ! Et on peut comprendre pourquoi : le webcomic adopte un format optimal sur téléphone et est gratuit. Le succès est donc garanti grâce à cette adaptation du marché opportune. Pourtant, aujourd’hui, on va parler d’une œuvre plutôt confidentielle en France, personne n’en a parlé en occident mis à part quelques youtubers américains.

Et ce n’est pas étonnant, ce qui frappe tout d’abord dans l’œuvre, pour nous les français, c’est tout d’abord le choc culturel. Jusqu’à maintenant, on connaissait bien les us et coutumes scolaires asiatiques, où il faut aller en cours en uniforme, où les classes restent dans la même salle qu’ils doivent entretenir en y faisant le ménage d’ailleurs. Mais il faut savoir qu’il y avait encore quelques années, les punitions physiques étaient aussi administrées par les professeurs eux même pour gérer les élèves. Une interdiction totale de toucher les élèves a été imposé par le gouvernement coréen, mais la transition n’a pas été des plus douce : en passant du tout au tout, la jeunesse du pays a commencé à ressentir un sentiment d’impunité, renforcé par un article de loi empêchant tout mineur de moins de 14 ans d’être condamné en cas d’infraction, de délit ou même de crime, tout au plus, ce sera traité comme une affaire de protection de l’enfance, et au pire, le délinquant devra être rééduqué quelques semaines dans un pénitencier de la jeunesse.

C’est là que la fiction commence : dans Get Schooled, le ministre de l’éducation a donc décidé de mettre en place le TRPA (Teacher Right Protection Agency), un organisme spécial qui enquête et qui est chargé de régler les situations les plus problématiques dans les écoles, mais pas seulement : ils prennent également en charge la protection générale de l’enfance et des professeurs. Pour leur donner les moyens de régler les cas les plus extrêmes, leurs agents ont une totale impunité pour tabasser tout élève enfreignant la loi.

Impunité totale qui est très très mal passé auprès de moi au tout début, j’ai eu mon petit choc en voyant un adulte régler la situation par une violence digne des meilleurs épisodes de Like a Dragon, et surtout, en y prenant un certain plaisir sadique.

Moi j’ai grandi avec GTO, et Onizuka, alors qu’il subissait DeepFake pornographique et harcèlement constant de ses élèves, il résolvait très peu la situation par la violence. A part dans le tome 1 où on lui a fait péter les plombs, par la suite, il gagne le respect de ses élèves autrement.

Cependant Get Schooled varie très rapidement le thème de ses histoires. Chaque histoire forme un arc, il y en a quatorze pour cette saison, répartie en 111 épisodes. Oui, dans les deux premiers arcs, la solution c’est de cogner les étudiants et ça mérite questionnement (même si la violence contre laquelle on lutte est si extrême que l’on pourrait comprendre pourquoi la violence en retour peut sembler légitime). Mais dès le quatrième arc, on n’hésite pas à remettre en cause la responsabilité des enseignants quand ils vont eux même trop loin, ou lorsqu’ils sont corrompus et à partir du cinquième arc, on se rend compte que c’est surtout la société coréenne qui est remis en cause. Une société de tous les extrêmes, où jamais un élément ne semble avoir fait l’objet de compromis, et où c’est ou tout ou rien.

Un pays où le gouvernement est ultra présent quand il s’agit des grands centres urbains mais où il disparaît complètement une fois que l’on pose un pied dans la campagne.

Un pays où les cultes possédant suffisamment d’argent peuvent exercer un pouvoir tel qu’ils peuvent retenir et fanatiser enfants comme adultes, au point d’avoir les moyens de construire des fausses écoles pour leurrer la police.

Un pays où le moindre écart peut même conduire sa présidente élue en prison, mais où les jeunes de moins de 14 ans peuvent commettre des homicides sans avoir aucune conséquence, pas même un casier judiciaire.

Un pays où, si un enfant est maltraité par ses parents, l’état ne peut pas les protéger, puisque ce sont les parents qui ont le dernier mot, même s’il y a enquête ou condamnation.

Avec un cadre 100% coréen, avec une violence visuelle et morale, voir même sexuelle, envers des personnages souvent mineurs, comportant des sujets aussi durs… on pourrait penser que l’on est en face d’une BD sans concession. Et bien non ! L’auteur s’est en effet servi de deux éléments réels pour façonner toute son œuvre. Premièrement, un groupe a bel été bien monté pour lutter contre la délinquance juvénile en marge de la loi, sauf que c’est une entreprise privée et pas une agence gouvernementale. Et oui, ils sont payés pour tabasser des délinquants mineurs, et c’est toléré car c’est devenu une sorte de mal nécessaire. Transformer Punishment Dream en TRPA chapeauté par le ministère de l’éducation est donc une concession pour éviter que cela devienne insoutenable pour le public, qu’il soit coréen ou d’ailleurs. La deuxième concession, c’est que l’auteur a pris des faits réels, mais en adoucissant les faits, là aussi pour que ça devienne tolérable, aussi bien pour lui que pour le public. J’explicite car c’est important (et vous êtes en droit de remettre en doute tout de même, je vous rassure là-dessus), ça signifie que les pitchs de chaque arc ont bel et bien existé (ou existent encore au présent) mais qu’ils ont été adoucis pour les besoins d’un webcomic que l’on pourrait classifier 16+.

Get Schooled n’est donc pas qu’un GTO de droite conservatrice, dans le contexte coréen, il est même le contraire et rejoint par la même occasion les œuvres coréennes punk comme Parasite ou Squid Game, le genre d’œuvre qui mettent justement des taquets dans les genoux de la société coréenne.

La valeur défendue par Get Schooled est plutôt la Justice. Le fait d’aider les faibles face aux forts qui abusent du système pour exercer leur violence en toute impunité. Face à une société laissant passer des violences atroces et extrême, des militaires surentrainés paraissent nécessaires, ne serait-ce que pour défendre les victimes lorsqu’elles sont en train de se faire agresser. De plus, le concept est remis en cause par l’auteur lui-même : les protagonistes ont les mains sales et œuvrent en marge de la loi et le savent très bien, certains antagonistes ont des arguments qui leur donnent raisons lorsque l’on parle du droit de l’homme ou des droits de l’enfant. De plus, bien que ce ne soit pas exprimé dans le texte, dans le sous-texte on comprend aisément que la TRPA tient par la volonté du ministre de l’éducation actuel, mais qu’une fois qu’il ne sera plus à son poste, ce sera terminé, car personne n’aura la même volonté d’acier et la même capacité à encaisser les scandales. Car la TRPA fait scandale. C’est un organisme qui fonctionne parce qu’elle fait peur, les seuls qui ressentent de l’espoir à la mention de cette organisation… Ce sont les victimes qui n’ont plus aucun recours.

Que peut-on dire en conclusion ?

Que Get Schooled est un excellent webcomic. Je n’ai pas abordé l’aspect technique, car les dessins sont à mes yeux, tout à fait excellent. On a parfois des visages qui me paraissent un peu bizarrement dessiné dans certaines expressions, mais ça disparait après l’arc trois. Les personnages sont attachants, aussi bien les personnages principaux que les victimes, on adore détester les bourreaux et on est ému lorsqu’il y a un arc de rédemption pour certains d’entre eux. Mais clairement, aujourd’hui, ça ne passera jamais en France. Aujourd’hui, on voit beaucoup plus dans les médias les jeunes se faire matraquer par la Police pour des raisons complètement illégitimes. La période où les professeurs se faisaient braquer pour la liste de présence semblent déjà bien loin alors que ça date d’il y a moins de dix ans, et on était plus dans l’exceptionnel que dans le quotidien, là où les situations dépeintes dans l’œuvre de Yongtaek Chae et Garam Han sont quelque chose de systémiques ou généralisés, quand ils ne sont pas encore plus spectaculaires. Jamais une œuvre pareille pourrait venir dans notre pays sans déchaîner les polémistes de tous bords, sans devenir un porte étendard des extrémistes qui essaieraient de l’utiliser pour justifier une politique répressive envers la jeunesse, et surtout, sans subir un boycott ou un ayatollah de personnes se pensant bien intentionné mais qui ne comprendront juste pas le contexte.

Si je parle de ce webcomic aujourd’hui, c’est surtout pour cela : comment une œuvre aussi bonne peut quand même passer complètement aux oubliettes en sortant de son pays ? Et là, on a tout ce qu’il faut pour que ça ne remporte jamais la gloire méritée, juste à cause de l’ethnocentrisme. Avoir le regard rivé sur sa propre culture au point où on oublie qu’il en existe d’autre. Le choc culturel est forcément inévitable. Mais il faut le dépasser, essayer de comprendre l’œuvre et pourquoi elle fait ce qu’elle fait, dans quel contexte ça a été fait et etc…

Confronter une œuvre d’une autre culture par rapport à la nôtre, oui, ça peut se faire. Aujourd’hui, beaucoup retienne de la Corée les superbes séries et les musiques avec moult idols pomponnés, en nous disant que tout est beau, tout est parfait là-bas. Mais la Corée, c’est comme le Japon, il y a énormément de points noirs et de phénomènes extrêmement grave qui sont issus de leur société. Et c’est pour ça que les œuvres comme Get Schooled sont importantes, qu’il est dommage que l’on n’ait quasiment rien de similaire chez nous et qu’il soit également dommage que ça ne marche pas chez nous tout court.

Gardez l’esprit ouvert et curieux, et ne précipitez jamais votre jugement, car vous pourriez passer à côté de très bonnes choses.

In honor of Book Lovers Day, I shall rank the three books I’ve read so far this year, going from best to least favorite (its only three cause I’m a slow reader and just recently got back into reading)

1 - “1984″ - George Orwell: I’m big on philosophy, politics and history so this was #1 by a long shot; I personally loved the writing style, though it can be a bit dense with information (books written before the 2000s tend to be); I would note that Orwell was cringe when it came to writing about women (trigger warning for brief mentions of r*pe on pages 15 and 120), but I definitely recommend for anyone interested in those topics I listed

2 - “One Last Stop” - Casey McQuiston: I haven’t actually finished this one yet, but based on what I’ve read it starts off a bit slow but picks up as the story goes. The book is very modern and relies on pop-culture references more garnered towards millennials. More of a relaxed and very human writing style that fits what you as a person might think and say on a regular basis. The MC has yet to win me over but some of the one liners and great, and its a book with queer main characters/romances.

3 - “Coraline” - Neil Gaiman: If you’ve seen the Coraline movie but haven’t yet read the book, I’d definitely try not to compare the two too much or you might end up a bit disappointed. The movie is definitely more whimsical, and personally I found the writing style a bit dull and dreary; it has a lot of description on the environment but in a way that didn’t really interest me (might be different for you though); writing picks up more towards the second half, and its a short read so good for if you want a book that’s not too overwhelming

Bonus: Webtoon Edition 

(not ranking these since I haven’t finished any of them, just giving general reviews)

“Heartstopper” - Alice Oseman: very heartwarming romance that heavily revolves around queerness and homophobia; diverse in both racial and LGBT identities; can get very angsty as it addresses some depressing themes, but it represents those themes well and is mostly very sweet and wholesome (sidenote: Netflix has one season of a show adaption of Heartstopper that is pretty good if you’re interested!)

“Wayne Family Adventures” - DC Comics (via various artists/writers listed on the site): for all the Batfamily fans that want a break from the gritty and dark nature of the comics; slice-of-life that revolves around the members of the Batman franchise having light-hearted hijinks, with the occasional angst that delves into life lessons; love this one in particular cause it actually puts a spotlight on more than just the four most well-known “batbros” and gives some love to the others in the family; highly recommend for any Batman fans that come across this post (not because you’re a Batman fan, but because you’re on Tumblr)

“Get Schooled” - Yongtaek Chae, Garam Han: omfg I love this webtoon so much. Its literally about a guy who beats the shit out of high schoolers. That’s it. But its so funny (and surprisingly depthful); I could go on and on about how this comic is more comedic but tends to nail the more serious aspects of the story, as well as the politics; great world building, and one of the only pieces of media I’ve seen that addresses themes like child abuse the way it does; also if you’re interested in men and women that are scary and could beat the shit out of you in the way that makes you attracted to them, I’d give this a go ;) 

“Boyfriends” - refrainbow: episodic slice-of-life that is diverse in LGBT identities, as well as a great read for representation of healthy polyamorous relationships; mostly very light hearted and low stakes; its like when you get candy on Halloween and just keep eating it up without a care in the world

“Study Group” - Hyungwuk Shin, Seungyeon Ryu: very typical Korean “bullied guy fights bullies” comic; love the artstyle though, and it can be pretty funny (I am also in love with the teacher character, she is so fucking gender); its one of my guilty pleasures

“Coffin Jackson” - CTK: I LOVE THIS ONE; subverted my expectations of being a super serious and gritty comic by being quite comedic and light-hearted (mind you it is still gritty and dark, just not all the time). The main characters have my heart, and the artstyle is something I want to put under a microscope and study like some freaky little scientist trying to understand color theory

“Fictional Skin” - Kris Nguyen: the one I read through the least; seems pretty easy-going so far, and Vivi is a character I enjoy a lot; from what I’ve seen, the plot will pick up into more exciting themes as the story goes, but its mostly just really cute

“Everything Is Fine” - Mike Birchall: a very normal comic where everyone is perfectly happy and easy-going; the characters are all content; nothing bad ever happens; nothing is wrong in this world; Everything Is Fine :)

“Vibe Check!” - Ucheomaaa: I literally don’t even know how to explain this one just go read it if you wanna laugh at obscure and weird internet humor

Five: Boyfriends

This webtoon is about these four college boys who start dating in a polyamorous relationship with each other. Its really sweet and wholesome. There isnt like a lot of drama or anything like that. Just four boys who learn how to love each other and be able to be themselves.

There are four main characters, Goth, Jock, Nerd, and Prep, which the story mainly following the perspective of Prep. Goth and Prep have been life long friends while Jock and Nerd have just met them. The story starts with Goth and Nerd dating and Prep and Jock dating but it goes into all of them getting together.

Not only is the story adorable but so is the art. Its a fairly simplistic style but its very cute and makes me fall in love with the characters even more. The artist goes by refrainbow and you can find the comic here.

Four: Get Schooled

Looking at this photo you would think that it is a happier tale, right? WRONG THIS IS A STORY ABOUT BULLYING AND ABUSE AND TRAUMA!!! Basically its about this organization that goes to problem schools to keep the students in check by beating them to a pulp.

The main character is this story Hwajin Na, who joined this company with his father in law. Apparently his wife has passed but the story hasnt told us how or who she is.

This story is rather gorey and there are quite a few trigger warnings so this is not for the feint of heart. But it is a good story with a good message about bullying and abuse. There are two artists, Yongtaek Chae and GARAM HAN, and you can find the webcomic here.

Three: Odd Girl Out

This webtoon is like a k-drama that follows a high school girl trying to become and independent person and coming to terms with her beauty amongst her overly beautiful friends. However, the second season mainly focuses on the heroine overcoming her insecurities and becoming a sort of leader amongst her peers.

Our main heroine is Nari Oh. She is a normal girl who is drawn into the drama brought on by her friend group while she is simply trying to live a normal life.

The art of this story is hilarious and really pretty. The artist puts a lot of hard work into this story and characters to make it so beautiful. The artist goes by morangji and you can find the webtoon here.

Two: My Giant Nerd Boyfriend

This is a rather popular story that I'm sure all of you have heard of. Its a story about a tiny weird girlfriend and her giant nerd boyfriend living together and their daily lives.

This story is told by fishball as she lives life with her boyfriend and dog, Biscuit. I dont believe they have told anyone their real names in the webtoon however. On an exciting note, the story has changed from My Gaint Nerd Boyfriend, to Mu Gaint Nerd Fiance!!!!

This art is very simplistic and comes in the form of these sort of comic strips. Its an adorable style and the characters are so cute! The artist goes by fishball and you can find the webtoon here.

One: Windbreaker

No one was surprised with this option. Windbreaker follows the story of extreme cycling and is completely fictional. Please for the love of god do not attempt to do anything they do in this series.

Jay Jo is the main character. The story follows his life, his friends, his family, and his intense love of cycling. This story makes you feel a connection to all of the characters and out of all of the webtoons becoming animated I really hope this becomes one.

The art is truly incredible and there is a lot of time and detail put into it. Its a really long series but it is so worth it. And this is also the final season or so i have been told. The artist is Yongseok Jo and you can find the webtoon here.
